Work Experience and Industry Placement

Work Experience and Industry Placement spaces are available in both semesters; we may suspend the application process if all places are taken. Please note that branches only take between 1-2 students per term, depending on the size of the branch.
What is Work Experience?
 
Work Experience is the short-term placement of students with ‘host’ employers, to provide insights into the library as a workplace. Students (typically in Year 10) are placed with employers primarily to observe and learn – not to undertake activities which require extensive training or experience. We accept Work Experience students from secondary schools. Work Experience applications must be made at least four weeks ahead of your planned commencement date.

What is an Industry Placement?
 
Industry Placements are frequently a required component of tertiary-level information services degrees. We are happy to accommodate students undertaking their mandatory Industry Placement. They are typically 10-day intensive placements designed to provide practical industry experience.
 
  • Youth organisations undertaking community service certificates, for example Queen’s Guide, Duke of Edinburgh etc. should submit an application for Work Experience.

Customer Service Librarian – Realm Library

Located at: Realm Library

About the role

Your library is looking for a Customer Service Librarian at our Realm Library, located on the second floor of the Realm building at the Town Square at Eastland’s busy shopping precinct.
As a customer service librarian, you’ll be supporting the Branch Manager with day to day operations, supervising the team and developing engaging programs and service experiences.

Tech Support Officer – Croydon Library

Located at: Croydon Library

Classification: Band 4 Level A-D – $73,281  – $79,619 

    • Temp FT 35 hours per week average
    • 11.5% Superannuation

About the role

To be a successful Tech Support Officer you must have customer service skills, love working with people and an affinity with technology.  Library customers can ask for help at any time of the day and we cannot pre-determine their questions, their devices or even their own capabilities.  More often than not they have been told by a friend that the “lovely person at the library will help” – so be prepared.

The role also provides first point of contact customer service.  The successful applicant will undertake routine library tasks and assist library staff as required.

About You: 

Your team colleagues often look to you for support.  You manage and facilitate weekly booked one-on-one sessions for developing technology literacy skills.  You will lead sessions about a variety of technology devices in bigger group sessions not necessarily in the library. 
To ensure success you need to build an excellent working relationship with your branch team and fellow Tech Support Officers. You support in-house technology training programs – you are your branch champion.

Children’s Officers

Position #1

Position #2

Located at: Montrose Library

Classification: Band 4, Level A-D

  • Permanent part-time – 22.5 hours per week
  • $67,972 – $73,848 plus Superannuation (pro rata)

We are seeking two Children’s Officers to join our teams at Realm Library and Montrose Library. Please note: You can apply for both positions with one application – please clearly indicate your preference.

We believe that Your Library is a great place to work. To be successful in either of these positions, you must be creative, think outside the box and have great organisational skills.

Being a Children’s Officer – it is not as easy as it looks. You will have help, guidance and support from our Regional Children’s Librarian and you will join the Children’s Team – a fantastic and supportive network.

You need experience working with children, young people and families, or the capacity and willingness to learn to work in this environment. You need to be confident and engaging and be prepared to sing & dance.

With guidance you will: 

  • Organise a range of storytime programs and activities that showcase Your Library’s Children’s Services.
  • Present engaging storytime experiences – with animated reading, rhyme & singing/music presentation skills.
  • Participate in planning and implementing promotional activities designed to increase literacy and encourage utilisation of “all things library”.
  • Perform a range of rostered library operations that support customers in a self-service environment based on a high level of knowledge of library products and services.

Key selection criteria

Please detail your experience or willingness to learn (200 word limit per criterion):

  • In creating leading edge Storytime programs, events and activities (including STEAM based) which will engage children in our libraries.
  • In building relationships with external children’s service providers, promoting library resources and facilitating outreach opportunities.
  • Highly developed customer service skills with demonstrated knowledge of techniques to deal with a range of internal and external customers.
  • A demonstrable high level of confidence and experience in digital literacy, and the ability to share this knowledge and skills with employees and customers, including experience in reference, research and information provision.
